Sea urchins in particular, known as "garoinas", have their own festival, "la Garoinada", which celebrates this delicacy in the early months of the year, the best time for quality fishing. Es Niu is another speciality of Palafrugell in Spain. It's a fish, egg and potato stew that takes over five hours to prepare! It's hard to find it on the restaurant menu, but you can sometimes order it in advance: if you see this opportunity passing by, go for it!
Walks and things to do in Calella, Spain
If you go to Calella de Palafrugell, don't miss the old fishermen's workshops along Canadell beach, which have been converted into holiday homes, as well as the famous botanical garden at Cap Roig, dating from 1927. This is an enclosed garden with large terraces and a wealth of Mediterranean vegetation. From here, it's well worth stopping off at one of the viewpoints to admire the panorama and the extraordinary coastline that stretches from Calella to the Formigues islands, via the cliffs of Cap Roig. From Calella to Llafranc, the walk along the coastal path is a must, for superb views and the chance to discover some pretty, somewhat hidden coves. The path is very passable, even for children, and depending on your walking ability and stamina, you can even extend the walk northwards towards the Mirador de la Divina Pastora, 2.5 km further on. Make the most of your stay in Calella to discover the two other hamlets of Palafrugell in Spain, Tamariu and Llafranc, which lie to the north of Calella. Calella's festivals and festivities

Two major events attract large crowds every year: the Cap Roig Garden Festival, held throughout the summer months and featuring live concerts by internationally renowned artists in the idyllic setting of the Cap Roig Gardens. Or the annual habanera festival, held in Calella de Palafrugell for three days in June, which attracts many holidaymakers to the beaches. The festivities go on until very late at night, with Cuban music taking centre stage and the beautiful streets of Calella filled with joyous song. A must-see at least once in your life!
