Peniscola, the City of Popes in Spain

Peniscola in Spain is an ideal destination for a pleasant and diverse holiday in a historical setting. The old Peniscola is a bit like a blend of Avignon and Mont St Michel. The old town is located on a rocky peninsula, originally connected to the mainland only by a sandy isthmus, making it easy to defend. Its ancient fortifications stand on the rocky pinnacle, dominated by the Castle of Pope Luna. Proud and majestic, Peñíscola rises almost 64 meters above the sea with all the solemnity that justifies the decision of the charismatic Pope Benoit Luna to choose it for his voluntary exile to make it "more enjoyable."

What to Do in Peniscola?

From discovering the architectural heritage to exploring the surroundings while enjoying the many activities offered by operators to passing travelers, you won't be bored for a moment during your stay in Peniscola!

The Beaches of Peniscola

Peniscola is bordered to the north by a marsh and to the south by the protected natural park of Serra d'Irat. Between the two, the city's coastline stretches for nearly 7 km and alternates between long stretches of white sand and more sheltered and confidential coves. Families and lovers of wild swims will find their happiness in one of the 15 sites and equipped beaches, next to the city center or a little away from the city. Moreover, most of the beaches display the Blue Flag in reward for the quality of their facilities! Here are some of Hispanoa's favorite spots:

  • Playa Norte: it is one of the liveliest beaches in Peniscola, with tourism in full swing as it is the closest beach to the city center, and it is lined with bars and restaurants. Many water activities can be practiced there, as well as beach games and sports;
  • Playa Sur: ideal for families as it is bathed by very calm waters, Playa Sur is located very close to the Peniscola marina and displays the Blue Flag. Beyond this beach, the coastline changes and becomes more rugged.
  • The coves of the Serra d'Irat natural park: the coves of Serra d'IRat south of Peniscola are more difficult to access, but the setting is worth the effort. You can access some of them by sea and enjoy an enchanting natural setting for kayaking or snorkeling.
  • Playa Las Viudas: in the extension of Playa Sur, Playa Las Viudas is an ideal compromise between a city center beach and the attendance that goes with it, and a haven of peace that remains easily accessible from the city center. You will find all the necessary services to spend a beautiful day with your family or friends;
  • Playa del Pebret or del Russo: these are the most natural beaches on the Peniscola coastline, and the only fine sandy beaches in the Serra d'Irat nature reserve. You will enjoy a swim in an enchanting natural setting, but you should be well-prepared if you plan to spend the day there, as the facilities are fewer than on the large beaches in the city center.

Peniscola is full of historical monuments that tell a lot about its medieval fortress past and have been beautifully preserved over the centuries: the Templar Castle and the Artillery Park are two witnesses that also offer a breathtaking view of the city and its surroundings. The Church of La Ermitana, right in the historic center of the city, dates from the 19th century and makes an excellent starting point for a walk in the old town.
